Donald Trump on Sunday slammed President Joe Biden over his response to the influx of migrants at the southern border, calling it a “national disaster.”

In his fiery statement, the former president claimed that his administration handed his successor the “most secure border in history.”

“We proudly handed the Biden Administration the most secure border in history,” Trump's statement read. “All they had to do was keep this smooth-running system on autopilot. Instead, in the span of just a few weeks, the Biden administration has turned a national triumph into a national disaster. They are in way over their heads and taking on water fast.”

Trump also lashed out at Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who appeared on a series of news shows Sunday morning to defend the Biden administration’s immigration policies, calling him “pathetic,” “clueless” and “self-satisfied.”

“It’s clear they are engaged in a huge cover-up to hide just how bad things truly are,” the former POTUS continued. “The only way to end the Biden Border Crisis is for them to admit their total failure and adopt the profoundly effective, proven Trump policies.”

Trump’s statement comes after Mayorkas appeared on CNN, NBC and Fox on Sunday, where he blamed the current surge of illegal families and unaccompanied minors on actions taken by the former administration.

“There was a system in place in both Republican and Democratic administrations that was torn down during the Trump administration, and that is why the challenge is more acute than it ever has been before,” Mayorkas said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Biden’s administration is currently facing scrutiny over record numbers of children being held in Customs and Border Protection (CPB) facilities. Republicans, Democrats and human rights advocacy groups have criticized the conditions in the facilities.

News outlets have been denied access to the facilities where the unaccompanied minors are being held. Mayorkas blamed the lack of press access to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Border Patrol agents are focused on operations, on securing the border, on addressing the needs of vulnerable children. We are not focused on ride-along right now," Mayorkas said.

CBP is currently holding around 5,049 unaccompanied minors as of Saturday, according to NBC News.

Biden's administration awarded Immigration and Customs Enforcement an $86 million contract for hotel rooms to house illegal families and children crossing into the country.
