KEY POINTS

  • Barry Loudermilk says Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats to Trump
  • Rep. Mike Kelly claims "December 18th, 2019 is another date that will live in infamy"
  • A Twitter user calls Trump the Republican's "personal, Sleazus"

An over-the-top Republican hyperbole in defense of president Donald Trump during the just concluded impeachment vote in the House of Representatives has elicited criticism and jokes on Twitter.

During the contentious and lengthy debates leading to Trump's impeachment Wesnesday, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) and Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) vented their anger and frustration at the Democrats with contrasting analogies.

Loudermilk, who in 2017 co-sponsored a bill that will eliminate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), drew astonishment from his colleagues at the House (and derision on the internet) with his statement comparing Trump to Jesus Christ, and saying Christ was treated more fairly before his crucifixion than Trump was during the impeachment process.

"Before you take this historic vote today, one week before Christmas, I want you to keep this in mind: When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers," he said. "During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president in this process."

On the other hand, Kelly compared the impeachment of Trump to the bombing of Pearl Harbor

“On December 7, 1941, a horrific act happened in the United States, and it’s one that President Roosevelt said, ‘This is a date that will live in infamy.' Today, December 18th, 2019 is another date that will live in infamy.”

Loudermilk's analogy comparing Trump and Jesus quickly drew widespread criticism and jokes on Twitter.

One Twitter user posted an image of the crucified Christ with Trump's face and this message to Republicans: "their own, personal, Sleazus." To which another replied, "Awesome. Someone should write an entire Personal Sleazus parody song. Instead of 'reach out and touch faith', it could be 'he has a small brain'..."

Someone else tweeted, "The republicans are so self righteous it’s sick that they use religion when it's convenient but impeach Bill Clinton for lying about an affair but they don’t mind trump's behavior which violates every commandment."

Another commented, "Did Jesus lie, steal from charity, bribe authorities, commit adultery and sleep with porn stars? Must of missed those verses in the bible!"

"I rebuke thee vile republican satan," Anton Newcombe tweeted.

@DCELL68 posted a photo of Trump crucified on a huge McDonald's sign. The tweet reads: "BTW, the McCrucifixion is on the dollar menu."

What this episode with Loudermilk also reveals is a GOP's penchant for comparing Trump to Christ. A pastor in North Carolina had a sign made accusing unnamed forces of “trying 2 impeach Jesus too!” A conservative columnist in a Kentucky newspaper wrote, “Trump has faced the same type of opposition” as Jesus as he's having at the House.
