Trump Vs. DeSantis: 5 Times The Republicans Have Clashed

KEY POINTS

  • Trump said DeSantis "could hurt himself very badly" if he runs against him
  • Trump is expected to make a "major" announcement on Nov. 15
  • DeSantis got reelected as Florida governor with an almost 20-point margin

Former President Donald Trump warned Florida Governor Ron DeSantis against challenging him in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries.

On the day of the crucial midterm elections, Florida native Trump voted for DeSantis but warned he "could hurt himself very badly" if he were to mount a presidential bid for the 2024 elections.

"I don't know if he is running. I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly. I really believe he could hurt himself badly," Trump told Fox News Digital.

The former president, who nicknamed the Florida governor "Ron DeSantctimonious," also threatened to expose some dirt against him.

"I would tell you things about him that won't be very flattering — I know more about him than anybody — other than, perhaps, his wife," Trump said.

He also fired warning shots at other possible GOP candidates, saying mounting a campaign against him would not "be good for the party."

Trump's latest statement about DeSantis came after announcing he would make an important statement on Nov. 15, which pundits believe would be his declaration of his third bid for the presidency.

CNBC reported that Trump wanted to launch his 2024 bid on the eve of the midterm elections, but his fellow Republicans urged him to postpone it since they feared that his announcement would galvanize Democrats and Independents.

A 2022 midterm exit poll conducted by Edison Research showed that about six out of 10 voters held an unfavorable opinion of Trump, compared to four out of 10 who viewed him favorably.

On the other hand, DeSantis cruised to reelection victory this year against Democratic challenger Charlie Crist. The Associated Press called the governor's win with a whooping margin of almost 20 points. In 2018, DeSantis barely won the gubernatorial race with just 0.3 points.

During the vote count, DeSantis was able to flip some traditionally Democratic counties in Florida, such as Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Osceola.

In his victory speech, DeSantis told his supporters they had "rewritten the political map" and described his reelection as a "win for the ages."

As the possible Trump-DeSantis rivalry brews, RealClearPolitics polling averages showed the former president comfortably ahead and DeSantis a distant second.
