KEY POINTS

  • President Donald Trump will make an appearance at the championship game between the LSU Tigers and the Clemson Tigers on January 13
  • The LSU Tigers are odds-on favorites to beat the defending champion, Clemson Tigers
  • Trump attended a previous game between LSU and the Alabama Crimson Tide

The biggest golf-loving president in U.S. history, Donald Trump, is expected to make a trip to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans to watch the country's two top college football teams -- the No.1-ranked LSU Tigers and defending champion Clemson Tigers -- duke it out in the winner-take-all match on January 13.

It's not clear why Trump said he plans to attend the championship game. The White House hasn't given any reasons. An administration official, however, confirmed Trump will be making the trip next week, noted ABC4 News.

It seems odd for some that Trump would want to spend time at a college football game than at the golf links so he can chill and forget his impeachment and what might be an impending war with Iran. Being seen as a team sports fan is always an upside for any president seeking re-election, however.

To his credit, this isn't the first time the President will be watching a big sports event. Trump has attended a few team sports games in recent months. He was present at Game 5 of the World Series (won 7-1 by the Houston Astros over the Washington Nationals), a college football showdown between LSU and Alabama (won by LSU, 46-41), and the annual Army-Navy football game (won by the Navy, 31-7).

Trump isn't expected to finish the three hour-long Tigers game, however. As with his previous football appearances, Trump will spend a few minutes at the game before departing.

The LSU Tigers and Clemson Tigers (ranked No. 3) go into the championship each with an unbeaten streak of 14 wins, of which 7 wins came at home. It's a rare battle of the unbeatens with the winner taking home the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship, which is better known this year as the "Tiger Bowl" for obvious reasons.

Clemson is looking for its third national title in the last four seasons. It defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 44-16 to win the 2019 championship with an undefeated 15-0 record. By doing so, Clemson became the first undefeated team in the CFP (college football palayoff) era to win the title. It also became the first to finish 15-0 in a single season since the 1897 Penn Quakers.

The Clemson Tigers are looking to repeat their unbeaten 2019 season this year but against the offensive machine that is the LSU Tigers, that job is as tough as it gets. Louisiana State University last won the national title in 2007 when it defeated Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game.

As for Trump, it's been estimated that he has spent one out of every five days in office playing golf at the various golf courses he owns. In 2016, Trump blasted president Barack Obama for playing golf on his vacation days. Trump said he'd be too busy "working for you" to play golf if he were elected president.

“If I win I may never see my property -- I may never see these places again. But because I’m going to be working for you, I’m not going to have time to go golfing, believe me. Believe me. Believe me, folks.”

This promise hasn't been kept.
