Jonathan Rhys Meyers, known for the TV show “The Tudors,” was taken into custody for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol after getting into a minor car crash in Malibu on Sunday.
According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Meyers was arrested after his vehicle was involved in a car crash. Police also revealed that the actor was issued a field sobriety test after they suspected that he was intoxicated, E! News has learned.
Law enforcement authorities also noted that the actor was arrested for “misdemeanor DUI” and was later released after posting a bail amount of $5,000.
It is not the first time that Meyers landed himself in the middle of a controversy. In 2018, the “Bend It Like Beckham” star was detained at the Los Angeles International Airport after getting into a noisy argument with his wife Mara Lane Meyers on an American Airlines flight, People reported.
“We had a situation where police received a call for service about a passenger that was arguing with his female companion and possibly smoking,” an LAPD officer was quoted as saying at the time.
Mara discussed the incident on her official Instagram account and said that her husband is “extremely sorry for any inconveniences caused.”
“8 months of sobriety and an unfortunate day of airline travel . We were in South America specifically working holistically through anger issues that result in these kinds of episodes. When in it, he is not in a frame of mind where he can really even comprehend the repercussions and necessary response to his own actions. J IS extremely sorry for any inconvenience caused to anyone traveling yesterday,” Mara wrote on the photo-sharing platform.
After getting sober in 2017, the actor relapsed in 2014 following his wife’s miscarriage. Mara also noted that Meyer had a lot of trouble dealing with the situation and turned to alcohol for some temporary relief.
“Depression is a real concern from past abuse as well as alcoholism which he was born with. He has been able to turn any ugliness and hurt in his life into art and is the strongest person I know,” Mara wrote.
