A Tulsa man has been arrested for crashing a car while driving with his 6-month-old son on his chest. The child suffered injuries in the collision.
Tulsa police were alerted about a crash at East 31st Street and South Memorial Drive on Saturday evening, reported KJRH-TV. The baby suffered minor injuries, probably from the car's airbag that got deployed following the crash.
Police said the northbound car collided with a truck and trailer heading east toward the BA Expressway. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital and his injuries were non-life-threatening.
The father, identified as Donald Ramsey, reportedly told police he was carrying the baby on his chest while driving. Ramsey said the child cries when placed in a carrier or car seat. A baby carrier was found in the back seat of the vehicle.
Ramsey was not injured in the accident. However, officers collected his blood sample as part of an investigation. He reportedly confessed to taking prescription medication and cannabis within 24 hours of the accident. Officers also found empty prescription narcotic bottles in the car. The father's statement conflicted with the condition of traffic signals at the time of the collision, officers said.
Police are awaiting the results of the blood test. No further information is available about the child's condition. Ramsey was charged with one count of child endangerment.
Officers have urged people who witnessed the accident to contact the Tulsa Police Department.
In a similar incident in Colorado, a drunk woman was arrested in May after she crashed her car, killing her 10-year-old son. Another child suffered minor injuries in the accident. Police said Karena Cecil lost control of her vehicle, which went off the road and rolled into the median. The car ended up on the other side of the road. Her son, identified as Gavin Cecil, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
