“For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career – if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting,” Tupac wrote. “But for me, at least in my previous perception, I felt due to my ‘image,’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was. I never meant to hurt you.”
Billboard added that Madonna and Tupac’s split was not all about their race difference. His ego was another factor in the breakup. He was hurt in one of her interviews when she said that she was “off to rehabilitate all the rappers and basketball players.”
“Those words cut me deep seeing as how I had never known you to be with any rappers besides myself. It was at this moment out of hurt and natural instinct to strike back and defend my hurt and ego that I said a lot of things,” the “All Eyez on Me” singer wrote. “In the time since, as you can see, I have grown both spiritually and mentally. It no longer matters how I am perceived. Please understand my previous position as that of a young man with limited experience with an extremely famous sex symbol.”
Tupac’s prison letter is up for auction on July 19-28 at Gotta Have Rock and Roll. The starting bid is $100,000 and it is expected to fetch more. Tupac’s last letter was sold for over $170,000.
Tupac and Madonna first met in March 1993 at the Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles. They were introduced to each other by Rosie Perez. After a year, they were spotted together at a Vogue dinner in New York. Madonna confirmed in 1994 that she dated the rapper, Daily Mail reported.
Madonna and Tupac’s romantic ties were strong by the end of March 1994 but it was over in February 1995. At the same time, Tupac started serving a prison sentence after he was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse.
On Sept. 7, 1996, Tupac was shot dead after watching a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand. No one was charged with his murder.
