'Twilight' Director Talks About 'Illegal' Kissing Scene Between Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson
"Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke opened up about Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson's kissing scene in the 2008 movie that could have led them into legal trouble.
The 66-year-old director held the podcast interview in her house where she took a screen test of Stewart and Pattinson in 2007. She took to crew members of "The Big Hit Show" podcast in the bedroom where the screen test took place.
"Rob and Kristen did the audition right here on the bed. They did the kissing scene and he fell off and landed right there on this floor," Hardwicke recalled Wednesday.
The director also revealed the moment Pattinson first entered her house for the audition and how he was a little out of shape. "He walked in and he had his hair was dyed black for some play, with these wacky bangs. He was a bit out of shape," the director said. "His shirt was just all messy, and I’m like, ‘Oh, OK. OK, let’s see how this goes."
Hardwicke noted how Pattinson was very much into the kissing scene because of which he fell off the bed. "I’m like, ‘Dude, calm down.’ And I’m in there filming with my little video camera, whatever," she explained.
"And at the end, Kristen was like, ‘It has to be Rob,'” Hardwicke said. "I could tell they had a lot of chemistry, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ I thought, Kristen was 17. I don’t want to get in some illegal things."
The director recalled informing Pattinson about Stewart's age, adding, "In our country, it’s illegal to have a sexual … ‘ And he’s like, ‘Oh, OK, whatever."
Hardwicke also recalled that "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer was not happy with Pattinson’s casting as she wanted Henry Cavill to play Edward Cullen's character. However, Cavill was 24 years old at that time and didn't fit well with 17-year-old Stewart.
"My opinions on the movie matter to no one. I have no influence on what goes on with the movie at all. No one is going to ask who I think should star in ‘Twilight,’" Meyer revealed on her own website in 2007. "The only actor I’ve ever seen who I think could come close to pulling off Edward Cullen is Henry Cavill."
"Twilight" was released in 2008 and the success of the movie led to four more parts of the franchise. "The Twilight Saga" franchise ended in 2012 with the movie, "Breaking Dawn: Part 2."
