  • Twitter users mocked the White House for defending Melania Trump after she removed her mask during a hospital visit
  • One netizen said it was disgraceful for the White House to defend Melania despite the death rate in the country
  • Several also defended Melania because she practiced the recommended social distancing protocol during her visit

The White House is taking the heat from Twitter users after releasing a statement to seemingly defend Melania Trump from her critics after she removed her face mask during a hospital visit.

The first lady visited the Children’s National Hospital. She removed her face mask while reading a book during her visit and it sparked criticisms from the netizens. The White House defended Melania by saying she was 12 feet away from the other people during the reading and the number of people present was limited. However, Twitter users were not convinced and they mocked the White House.

"Yeah. Comfort is more important than survival. COVID-19: Melania Trump defended by White House after taking mask off to read at children's hospital," one tweeted.

"Of course they did.. I mean why would they not. They've never shown any empathy to human life in since Jan 20th, 2017, no point starting now," another wrote.

"Disgraceful that they feel the need to defend her. Death rates in America are the same this year as last year. We are dealing with a scam," another added.

"Those scumbags will defend the Trumps to the death, I hope," another wrote.

Despite the backlash, many also defended Melania because as what the White House explained, she was 12 feet away from the people in the venue. Also, some of them felt that the complaint was already unreasonable and probably came from those who were not aware of what really happened during the reading.

"From the photos it Looked like the 2 meter rule was upheld. Complain when it's needed otherwise [shushing face emoji]," one wrote.

"She was 12feet away from the children. She did not require a mask," another commented.

"Leave the poor woman alone. She’s taken enough stick because of her husband. They’ll be gone soon," another added.

"FAKE NEWS MEDIA AND JOURNALISTS ARE POISONOUS and dangerous. How do you read with mask on?" a fourth user defending Melania wrote.

The White House explained earlier that the District of Columbia health guidance doesn't require a mask for a person giving a speech for broadcast or an audience provided that he or she is within six feet away. During Melania's reading, she was more than 12 feet away from the other people present.
