"Saturday Night Live" made a surprising announcement Saturday that Tesla's billionaire CEO Elon Musk will be hosting an upcoming episode of the NBC show, and some social media users are not impressed.
Miley Cyrus will be joining Musk as musical guest for the May 8 episode of "SNL." However, some Twitter users would rather see the singer serving as both the host and musical guest.
"Please just let Miley do double duty," Jillian Sederholm, EW's digital news director, commented.
"Not too late to make this a Miley double duty show," another wrote.
"Cancel this episode now. Just delete the post, say it was a funny joke, have Miley do double duty and never entertain an idea so horrendously stupid again," another Twitter user commented.
Others criticized NBC for its decision to let Musk host instead of comedians or actors.
"literally zero reason to be hosting," Jeremy Wein, host of "This My Show," wrote.
"Thousands of talented, funny young folks who haven’t quite broken out & could really use the chance so let’s have a humorless not-self-made billionaire who says crap like," Ned Pyle tweeted alongside a screenshot of a tweet from Musk saying, "The coronavirus panic is dumb."
However, fans of the billionaire quickly defended Musk and said they are looking forward to his appearance on the NBC sketch show.
"He’s accomplished, interesting and silly. I’ll 100% watch this billionaire host and that’s what SNL does anyway - take current pop culture icon (actors, sports, etc) and wrap a hilarious squad around them that knows how to make anyone funny. Enjoy and I kinda hate u for ur tweet," one Twitter user wrote.
"Elon is funny and yall just hating cuz yall poor!" another wrote.
"It’s not about SNL making him more famous! I think the show will be hilarious because Elon is a funny guy, besides being the greatest entrepreneur the world has ever seen! Elon will help SNL in this case," a third user added.
"They hate the rich. Doesn’t matter that he’s innovating in electric cars and solar and global satellite communication and sponsoring a $100M prize for carbon capture technology. He’s just a bad guy because he has a lot of money," another netizen commented in response to one question asking why the people hate Musk.
"LOVE! He's going to be great. Elon is hilarious," a fifth user added.
"Ok whatever, I love Elon hosting SNL I expect v good content," another wrote.
Musk has made appearances on TV shows and movies in the past. The SpaceX CEO made cameos on Marvel's "Iron Man 2," an episode of "The Big Bang Theory," a 2015 episode of "The Simpsons" and several episodes of "South Park."
"SNL" has also featured business moguls as host in the past, such as former New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and former President Donald Trump, before he took office, CNN noted.
