Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was spotted partying maskless at a packed drag bar in Miami this week, sending Twitter users into a frenzy, with many calling her out for socializing without a face mask.
In a video posted by journalist Brendon Leslie, the New York congresswoman was seen waving to mostly maskless bargoers while being introduced onstage. Leslie is a reporter for right-wing publication Sunshine State’s Conservative Voice.
“AOC is STILL lounging it up in Florida, in large crowds and maskless. This time at a Drag Queen bar in Miami. Rules for thee but not for me,” Leslie wrote in a tweet. “We don’t actually care she’s maskless. We care she fear mongers about Florida but then has the audacity to vacation here.”
Photos from the event also showed Ocasio-Cortez socializing and hugging actor Billy Porter without a face covering.
“Looks like AOC remembered to social distance while in Florida,” said Benny Johnson, host of The Benny Show, who shared the images.
Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., also took to Twitter to joke about how Democrats kept coming to his state to take a vacation even after slamming the state’s response to COVID-19.
"If I had a dollar for every lockdown politician who decided to escape to Florida over the last two years, I'd be a pretty doggone wealthy man,” DeSantis said during a Monday press conference.
Ocasio-Cortez has long criticized Florida for its lax COVID-19 restrictions. She has also repeatedly used the southern state as an example of how other states should not do things amid the spread of the virus.
Florida currently has no mask mandates in place even as the Omicron variant causes a surge of coronavirus cases. Over the past two weeks, the state reported a 948% increase in infections, with health officials recording 85,707 cases over the weekend.
Only Glades County in the state has reported a positivity rate below 10%. Broward County currently has the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in Florida with nearly 40%. Palm Beach and Miami-Dade follow closely with 34%.
As of Monday, Florida recorded 4,209,927 COVID-19 cases and 62,504 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, data from Johns Hopkins University showed.
