Actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde has signed a deal with Sony Pictures to helm a Marvel movie about a female superhero, as per reports.
Sources told Deadline that the secret project will be written by Katie Silberman. This would be Silbeman’s second project with Wilde. They previously worked together for the movie “Booksmart.”
Meanwhile, Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor will serve as producers for the project.
The news went viral on social media and netizens started speculating that the movie might be about Spider-Woman. Twitter users were happy with Sony's decision in choosing Wilde to helm the movie. One netizen wrote that the movie is going to be really “good” and called Wilde a “genius.”
“It’s gonna be so good. This woman is a genius at directing,” the user commented.
Meanwhile, another user said that he would love to see Wilde helm a movie about Squirrel Girl.
“After ‘Booksmart,’ I could absolutely see her killing it with Squirrel Girl. Looking forward to seeing it who it is,” @kevinpowr wrote.
“Happy to see @marvel including films #DirectedbyWomen in their universe! Can’t wait to see what @OliviaWilde does with this,” another user commented.
“YES! Love Olivia! Would love to work with her someday – heard nothing but great things,” @blondiebear622 wrote.
On the other hand, some wished to see her act in the movie, too.
“Olivia Wilde is an AWESOME choice. I REALLY hope she also makes a Cameo. She’s a GREAT Actress,” a netizen commented.
“I usually don’t want directors starring in their own movies, but I’d love to see Olivia Wilde be Jessica Drew. Also, she’s a great actor. I hope she doesn’t completely leave acting to be a big-time director,” @DrEgoTrip stated.
"Olivia Wilde is amazing. Her direction of 'Booksmart' was a refreshing and honest look at young women relationships. She's awesome," @realink wrote.
A lot of social media users claimed that it would be a Spider-Woman movie because Wilde shared an article on her official Twitter handle and captioned it with just a spider emoji.
This marks the second movie based on a female character in Sony’s universe of Marvel characters. In May 2020, it was reported that SJ Clarkson was tapped to develop a “first female-centric movie” for Sony’s Marvel universe.
Wilde’s directorial debut, “Booksmart,” garnered universal acclaim. The film received numerous nominations, including a Best Original Screenplay nod at the BAFTAs. The movie currently holds a score of 97% on the review site Rotten Tomatoes.
