KEY POINTS

  • Senator Tim Scott opposed Donald Trump's impeachment because it would only lead to more hate
  • Many Twitter users said impeachment is necessary for the healing of the country
  • Some users said there is no reason to impeach Trump despite the Capitol riot

Senator Tim Scott voiced his opposition to Donald Trump's impeachment in a series of tweets and many disagreed with him.

On Tuesday, the GOP senator took to Twitter and announced that he would not vote to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial. He said doing so would only “lead to more hate and deeply fractured nation,” but many opposed his reasoning.

While some got Scott's point, many also reminded him of the violence that happened under Trump's administration. For them, impeaching Trump is holding him accountable.

"Impeachment is the accountability necessary for healing. You are wrong," one commented.

"There can only be healing & unity if there is accountability," a second user agreed.

"The President is being charged with inciting insurrection: it is the highest, most serious charge ever levied on an American President. Are you defending him? Are you defending the murderers and terrorists he fed with lies? Or are you just saying 'No big deal, let's move on,'" another added.

"Coward. He needs to be held accountable for his actions. We cannot let him simply run out the clock and walk away," Jason Rabinowitz wrote.

"So, just to be clear. You believe that people should not be held responsible for their actions?" a fifth user asked.

"An impeachment will lead to accountability. why are you opposed to accountability, senator?" another questioned Scott.

Several explained that Trump has to be impeached for accountability and failing to do so would only lead to more hate and violence after the riot at the Capitol. Many also believed that without accountability, the country will remain fractured.

Meanwhile, some agreed with Scott because, for them, the president didn't commit any crime. Several disagreed that he incited violence as what many claimed before.

"So no actual crime. No actual incitement. Just saying that there were irregularities in the election process. He never said “sic em”. Perhaps read the transcript. And what crime do you suggest we convict an American President of here?" one asked to those who wanted to impeach Trump.

"There is simply no case for impeaching Donald Trump. Addressing a rally of his supporters (where he absolutely did not incite any violence) cannot be grounds for impeachment. I doubt it’ll go to trial. Let’s see," another wrote.
