Two children were shot after they threw snowballs at passing vehicles in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Shortly before 8 pm, on Saturday, officers from the Milwaukee Police Department responded to a report of a shooting. They found a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl suffering from gunshot wounds.
It was not long before the cause of the attack was traced to a single snowball.
Milwaukee law enforcement released a statement saying a preliminary investigation into the incident reveals the victims had been playing as part of a group, throwing snowballs at passing cars.
One of them struck a white Toyota, and the driver responded by firing shots at the group resulting in the two children getting hit.
Officers proceeded to render first aid to the children who did not have life-threatening injuries. They are currently recovering at a Milwaukee hospital.
The police are searching for surveillance footage from nearby homes for a clue into the identity of the shooter. There are no arrests, though, thus far.
The residents in the northwest Milwaukee neighborhood where the shooting happened were shaken.
Ravell Davis stated that he and his wife have six children. They were in the kitchen, and he heard loud booms, so he told everyone to get down. He added that it becomes ridiculous when he looks outside, and the front and side of the home are taped off.
It is currently not being treated as a mass shooting. However, it does bear significance to the statistics of gun violence in the state so early during the year.
Of the reported 255 mass shootings, which were in 2019, only two of them happened in Wisconsin. The most recent mass shooting in Wisconsin took place in Lake Hallie and Lafayette, near Chippewa Falls in July.
Five people were then killed in two different locations within the state and incident, including the perpetrator, who ended up shooting himself.
The other mass shooting happened in Milwaukee in June. There were no deaths for the incident, but four individuals were injured.
It is not the first time children have been the victim of gun violence in the state. Between 1999 and 2014, 408 children in the state of Wisconsin have been killed by firearms, including 21 children in 2014.
Firearms were designated as the third leading cause of injury demise for children in Wisconsin, and they have killed more in the state than drowning and fires.
Milwaukee law enforcement has asked anyone with information concerning the incident to contact the department at 414-935-7360.
