Two physical education teachers of a Florida elementary school have been arrested after they mistakenly entered a home following a night of heavy drinking. One of the teachers chased and shot the male resident.
After a night out on Oct. 10, the two men, Darius Cohen, 26, and Akkua Hallback, 27, went to an apartment complex where a woman whom Hallback had met earlier that day lived. Cohen and Hallback then walked inside one of the apartments in Vero Beach around 4:40 a.m, thinking it belonged to the woman.
After entering the house, one of them climbed into bed with the male resident, his wife and their baby while the other teacher went to the bathroom.
"Nothing good is happening after midnight," Sheriff Eric Flowers said during a news conference, according to WANE. "These two guys are going out, they’re drinking at these bars, by 4 a.m. they’re involved in a shooting," the officer said.
Both the teachers allegedly thought they were inside the apartment of the woman they visited earlier, said police.
"Mr. Hallback went in and got back in the bed he thought was the young lady’s bed, but it was actually the couple’s bed," Sheriff Flowers said, according to the outlet.
"The wife initially was the one that heard them. And alerted her husband she started screaming his name," Flowers said to WPTV. "That's when he addressed the one that was in the bed and trying to keep them calm because of the children in the house," he added.
The male resident escorted both the intoxicated suspects out, but Cohen got into a scuffle with the owner once they were outside. Cohen chased the victim and fired four shots at him. One of the bullets struck the victim in the back, according to the arrest report.
The victim ran to a friend’s house and called 911. He suffered from a non-life-threatening injury, said police.
Police later apprehended the two teachers at the scene.
Both the men were fired from their teaching jobs last week, said David Moore, the school district superintendent.
Cohen has been charged with attempted felony murder while Hallback is facing a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
