Two children, who were inside their father's SUV, were abducted in San Francisco during a carjacking incident Saturday evening. Four-year-old Winnifred Fang and one-year-old Sean Fang were later found safe along with the car at Bayview district Sunday morning, reports Insider. However, the suspects involved in the crime are still at large.
"Children have been located and are safe! Medical attention summoned just as a precaution," said David Lazar, deputy chief of the investigations bureau, on Twitter.
According to police, the victim, a DoorDash delivery man, left his silver Honda Odyssey parked on the 2100 block of Jackson Street, with its engine running while he was making a delivery at 8:47 p.m. when the theft occurred.
Police had issued an Amber Alert in connection with the incident for San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Marin and Santa Clara counties. All units, including motorcycles, traffic enforcement and dirt bikes, were mobilized for the search.
The children's father Jeffrey Fang said he was informed on the wee hours of Sunday morning that the vehicle was found with kids inside.
"At that point it was — relief is an understatement — it was elation. It was like, 'Oh God! Oh God, Yes, they’re alive.' They’re safe,” said Fang.
He said he does not earn enough to hire a babysitter and he is also scared of them contracting the coronavirus from caretakers. With few options, Fang felt the safest option was to take his children with him while he worked.
Meanwhile, a search is on for the main suspect, identified as a Hispanic male, with black hair and brown eyes. He is said to be armed and dangerous.
“We’re making a personal appeal to the people that were involved in this to turn themselves in because this crime was extremely serious and (stealing) a vehicle to take two small babies away from their parents and abandon them! Thank goodness our police officers were out there until we found those kids,” said San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott.
The police have also asked people with information to come forward. One can call the police department tip line at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411, beginning the text message with “SFPD.”
