KEY POINTS

  • Two men from Spain and New Zealand made an Earth sandwich
  • They used an online mapping tool to find opposite spots on Earth
  • They were 20,000 kilometers apart when they made the sandwich

Two men from opposite sides of the globe were able to make the perfect Earth sandwich. According to the man behind the project, he and his partner were about 20,000 kilometers apart when they made the sandwich.

The plan to put Earth between two slices of Earth was hatched by computer science student Etienne Naude from Auckland, New Zealand. Although making an Earth sandwich seems a bit simple and straightforward, Naude noted that finding someone close to an exact location on the opposite side of the world can be a bit tricky.

According to Naude, he used the website Map Tunneling Tool to find his exact position using latitude and longitude. Using the same site, he was then able to find a spot on the other side of the world that’s directly opposite to his location.

After learning that the opposite spot was in Spain, Naude posted on the Spanish section of Reddit to see if anyone would be interested in making an Earth sandwich with him. Although a lot of people replied to his post, only one person was close to the area he pinpointed on the online map.

Naude noted that even though he was able to find a partner in Spain, pulling of the Earth sandwich was still very challenging due to a number of factors.

“It was quite hard to organize since its 12-hour time difference,” he told the BBC. “And there's lots of things to arrange, such as the kind of bread, the time, the [precise] location, et cetera.”

In order to find the spot in Auckland that perfectly lines up with that in Spain, Naude traveled about hundreds of meters from his house. His partner, on the other hand, traveled for about 11 kilometers to reach the right spot in Spain.

After reaching their respective locations, Naude and his partner placed slices of bread on the ground, basically sandwiching the Earth from opposite sides. From their locations, there was about 12,724 kilometers of Earth between the slices of bread. As for the actual distance, the locations in Spain and Auckland were about 20,000 kilometers apart.
