Tyler Perry, one of Hollywood’s renowned producers, has come forward to help the family of Rayshard Brooks who was fatally shot by an Atlanta police officer on June 12.
According to The Independent, the “Gone Girl” star has offered to bear the cost of Brooks’ funeral. The announcement was made by the attorney of Brooks’ family during a press conference.
Brooks, a 27-year-old African-American man, was shot and killed by Garrett Rolfe, a white Atlanta Police officer, on Friday night after fleeing an altercation with police at a Wendy’s restaurant. Brooks had been asleep in the drive-thru lane.
He failed a sobriety test, and two responding officers were moving toward him to take him into custody. Reports suggested that Brooks took one of the officer’s tasers and ran. On the basis of an autopsy, it was found that Brooks was shot twice on the back. He later died of organ injuries and blood loss during emergency surgery.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner has ruled the death of Brooks as a homicide.
Following his death, a lot of celebrities came out and voiced their outrage on social media. Justin Timberlake took to Instagram and uploaded a photo of Brooks to express his displeasure over the violence against black people. The “Sexy Back” hitmaker wrote that the dad-of-three, along with three others who were also killed within the past week, should not be dead.
Like Timberlake, Eilish also shared Brooks’ snap on the photo-sharing platform. The singer demanded justice for the 27-year-old and also asked why people were not talking about this particular case.
The nation is already witnessing a lot of protests after the death of George Floyd and now the killing of Brooks has only intensified the Black Lives Matter movement.
Floyd lost his life after a police officer kept his knee on his neck for several minutes, despite Floyd saying that he could not breathe. As of late, all the police officers involved in the incident have been arrested and charged with third-degree murder.
Since the death of Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, a large number of protests have taken place all across the globe. Apart from the U.S., many people in countries like the U.K., Germany, France, Syria, and New Zealand have filled the streets to show their support to the black community.
