  • Tyronn Lue is rumored to be the next head coach of the Houston Rockets
  • He served as assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers
  • Lue earned $7 million as Cleveland Cavaliers head coach

Tyronn Lue earned $7 million as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. His next team could pay him more than his previous salary.

Lue is rumored to be the next head coach of the Houston Rockets. He spent the 2019-2020 season as an assistant to Doc Rivers in Los Angeles. Now, Rivers is coaching the Philadelphia 76ers and Lue could see himself back to being a head coach of a new team.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, it was some sort of homecoming for Lue and the Clippers. Before signing to become a deputy coach for the Cavaliers in 2014, he served as assistant coach for the Clippers from 2013 to 2014. He was an assistant in Cleveland for two years before getting promoted as head coach in 2016. Lue’s appointment as head tactician proved crucial as the Cavaliers won its first and only NBA title in that year.

Critics were skeptical of Lue’s exorbitant salary as an assistant in the Cavaliers. He signed a 4-year, $6.5 million contract, per Bleacher Report. But if the Cavs did not sign him as assistant coach, Lue would not have gotten the opportunity to take over David Blatt’s position. This means the title would not have happened.

The job of a head coach is a difficult one. Often, when a team wins, the credit goes to the players. When a team loses, the blame is pointed to the coaching staff. For Lue, he understands the demands and doesn’t let the noise distract him. “I do what I do to the best of my ability; the outside noise doesn’t bother me,” a part of his interview published by The Undefeated read.

The Mexico, Missouri native was once linked to the head coaching position of the Lakers. Lue demanded a 5-year deal, but the Lakers only offered a 3-year contract. Another Bleacher Report article indicated that Lue had taken himself out of the pool when the Lakers did not give in to his request.

As Rivers went to mentor Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, the coaching staff of Clippers are free to interview for openings for other teams. The Rockets mutually parted ways with former coach Mike D’Antoni.

Should Houston sign Lue to lead the team next season, the franchise would get his expertise in handling a loaded roster. After all, Lue won with LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love in the Cavs lineup. Fans expect Lue to get the most out of Russell Westbrook and James Harden, which when done properly, could earn the 43-year-old his second NBA title as head coach.
