KEY POINTS

  • Current heavyweight champs Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could face each other next
  • UFC star Greg Hardy and WBA international champ Michael Hunter both want Fury and Joshua
  • Hardy and Hunter are not favorites to become Fury and Joshua's next challengers

Two heavyweight fighters insist they have what it takes to take on world boxing champs Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

After coming off decisive victories this year, Fury and Joshua are touted to face each other next in an epic heavyweight unification title bout. But while the megafight has not yet been made official, the pair has been called out by NFL-star-turned-UFC-contender Greg Hardy and WBA international and inter-continental heavyweight champ Michael Hunter.

Hardy has been enjoying his MMA journey. So far, the “Prince of War” already has seven wins and three losses to his name as a pro fighter. Unfortunately, Hardy lost to Marcin Tybura at the recent UFC Fight Night 183. But prior to facing Tybura, Hardy revealed his plans to make a switch to boxing in the future.

“After I get done shutting this down, handling my MMA business, I want to venture into the boxing realm,” Hardy told reporters during Thursday’s virtual media day.

With zero pro boxing experience and a latest TKO loss in the UFC, Hardy is unlikely to be handed a chance to share the ring with either Fury or Joshua. However, the 32-year-old is oozing with confidence, insisting he could “knock out” the current champs, including former WBC heavyweight titlist Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder.

“I’m trying to holler at Dana (White),” the UFC star said. “Hopefully we can get some fights in the Zuffa Boxing world, Top Rank, Al Haymon – somebody come holler at this dude because I definitely want to go over there and knock out ‘The Gypsy King,’ make light work of that English cat [Anthony] Joshua, or whatever it is, [Deontay Wilder] ‘Cry-baby Bomber.’ We’ll knock all those guys out, man.”

“Of course you know I’m going to work for it,” he continued. “It’s an aspiration I think will come true real fast, and I can’t wait for it.”

Aside from Hardy, Hunter, who had just defended his WBA belts against Shawn Laughery on Friday, also wants a crack at Fury and Joshua.

“I wanna expose these dudes real soon,” Hunter told Elie Seckbach of EsNews during a training session in November. “Because, see they all message me and text me to spar or come spar me. (But) I’ve been asking to fight with them with every show that I was on.”

Unlike Hardy, Hunter is a legitimate boxing champ. However, the California native isn’t a favorite to become Fury and Joshua’s next challenger compared to the likes of Wilder, Dillian Whyte and Luis Ortiz.
