KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool's title defense continues with a series against Atletico Madrid
  • Manchester City and Real Madrid engage in battle of domestic league title contenders
  • Barcelona looks to regain European domination in this year's knockout stages

The UEFA Champions League just had its draw for the Round of 16 on Monday, and the draw resulted in very feisty match-ups.

Reigning Premier League champion Manchester City was drawn into a showdown with perennial La Liga Santander powerhouse Real Madrid.

Lionel Messi and the rest reigning La Liga Santander champion Barcelona, on the other hand, found themselves in a showdown with rising Serie A force Napoli.

Defending Ligue 1 champion Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, will engage in a blockbuster showdown with German Bundesliga stronghold Borussia Dortmund in another playoff first round match-up.

The draw also saw Chelsea and reigning German Bundesliga winner Bayern Munich pitting a rematch of the 2012 championship game.

Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of Juventus will face off with another Ligue 1 contender, Olympique Lyonnais, in another Round of 16 affair.

Other Round of 16 pairings will have Atalanta taking on Valencia, Tottenham Hotspur battling Red Bull Leipzig, and Atletico Madrid colliding with Liverpool.

Here are the series that one may really need to look at.

Manchester City vs. Real Madrid

The showdown between Manchester City and Real Madrid is a must watch since both teams are actually contending for the championship in their respective mother leagues.

However, for City, stunning Real Madrid in the two-legged affair could give the club a major boost if it still wants to keep the Premier League title--and possibly keep Pep Guardiola as manager as well.

City is way behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, and as per what Bleacher Report's Tom Sunderland could suggest, beating Real Madrid could at least save Guardiola's post for the meantime.

Barcelona vs. Napoli

Barcelona is a cinch to even sweep Napoli in their own two-game series, but for the Catalonians, they may need this playoff series win to build their way back to Champions League title contention after a string of disappointing finishes in the knockout stages.

Atletico Madrid vs. Liverpool

While the Atletico Madrid-Liverpool pairing is expected to be fun as well, this series became even more fun because Twitter came alive when it was formally set.

Considering that Liverpool is the defending Champions League winner, a playoff series pitting the club is anticipated to be a blockbuster.

So when Atletico was drawn to face Liverpool, the Spanish club quickly trended on Twitter... well for not so good reasons.
