Before taking on his next challenger, Kamaru Usman addressed his Georges St-Pierre comparisons.
Usman evidently needs no hype in his career. He has never lost a single fight in the UFC, and his impressive 13-fight winning streak equals that of St-Pierre, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.
In an exclusive interview with UFC’s official website, “The Nigerian Nightmare” shared his thoughts about St-Pierre. According to Usman, he and GSP are both exceptional fighters, but people should stop comparing them because they are both great in their own way.
“He was the man while I was looking at the sport and looking to get into the sport,” Usman said of St-Pierre. “So, as far as comparing legacies, I don’t because I wasn’t Georges St-Pierre. I wasn’t in the sport while he was competing, so I really don’t. I’m living in my moment and seeing what I’m doing.”
“People continue to try to compare and put us together. It’s really not a comparison,” he continued. “Georges was great with the opposition that he was presented with, and we all see now what I’m doing with the opposition that I’m presented with, so I think we’re both great in our own light.”
Usman has repeatedly called out St-Pierre in the past. However, “Rush” insisted that a fight against Usman isn’t worth ending his four-year retirement.
“To go back and give three months of my life in a training camp to get a win over Kamaru Usman doesn’t get me motivated,” St-Pierre told Sportsnet’s “Good Show with Ben Ennis & JD Bunkis” in February. “I don’t think there’s anything that would get me motivated to go back to competition now. I’m not sure.”
“Try to put yourself in my shoes and try to come back,” the former UFC champ continued. “First, if I come back to fight Kamaru Usman, I would literally have to leave the country. I would have to bring my coaches somewhere, find a base camp, fly in training partners to get ready for Usman. But leaving my home, I don’t want to do it. I’m healthy, I’m wealthy. It’s not appealing to me to lose three months of my life, the stress, to try and get a win over Usman.”
Usman was able to defend his title against Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal in their rematch at UFC 261. The current champ stopped his challenger in the second round via KO.
Ahead of the title fight, the 33-year-old has emphasized that despite the a lot of trash-talking, he’s not taking things personally between him and his opponent.
“It’s not personal at all,” Usman recently told MMA Junkie. “If he’s making it personal, that’s on him. For me, it’s not personal. It’s all about business, and he’s that next guy that I’ve picked.”
