Conor McGregor got his first response after the Irishman named a potential list of fighters he would be willing to face when he makes his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) return in the coming months. Frankie Edgar was the first to respond to The Notorious’ comments, which were made during his first interview after losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Irishman announced his retirement from UFC earlier this year after losing his title fight against Nurmagomedov after which both fighters served a ban owing to an after-match brawl between members of both the camps. He recently revealed that he was planning a comeback in July but a broken hand during a sparring session put paid to that plan.

During the interview, when asked about potential opponents for his comeback, McGregor had a number of fighters on his list with Nurmagomedov being the obvious one owing to him having been his most recent opponent while there were also talks about the still anticipated trilogy match with Nate Diaz.

Edgar was a surprise mention but McGregor admitted that the former UFC men’s lightweight champion was quite high on the list because he has a similar fighting style to Nurmagomedov. The Irishman, who is currently nursing a hand injury, is expected to be fit to return to the octagon by the end of the year.

“You know who else is at the top of the list, Frankie Edgar, is also right there, up there at the top of the list,” McGregor said during a recent interview on ESPN, as quoted on MMA Fighting. “Because he has similarities to Khabib, runs on the back foot, shoots on the single leg. I want these types of similar bouts and also Frankie has been very respectful. Frankie has always been respectful.”

Edgar, however, announced his intention of moving to the bantamweight division after his recent loss to reigning featherweight champion Max Holloway. But the 37-year-old, popularly known as “The Answer”, saw McGregor’s comments and decided that he is willing to delay his decision to switch divisions in order to fight the Irishman.

“You know I’m down to fight,” Edgar said on Instagram while responding to McGregor. “It should have happened a long time ago. I know I’m going down to bantamweight but for you any weight class will do. Anytime any weight class you know I’m game.”
