KEY POINTS

  • Colby Covington is a supporter of President Donald Trump
  • Kamaru Usman is an immigrant from Nigeria
  • Covington ran away from the octagon when Usman was announced as the winner

For a moment, Kamaru Usman’s TKO victory over Colby Covington was a story of a satisfying victory of a fighter beating up a trash-talking villain due to his off-the-ring antics but more than that, the fans found satisfaction making fun of it.

As some are making a joke out of the result, some cannot help but tie it up with politics.

Covington is an avid supporter of US President Donald Trump and he’s seen a lot of times wearing the red MAGA Hat (Make America Great Again) and him fighting Usman, an immigrant from Nigeria, carried more weight than the UFC belt itself.

During a post-show interview in August, the two fighters had a heated conversation and it is evident that the 31-year old fighter from Clovis, CA, is not hiding his support to the POTUS and for some, especially to those that aren’t, it is not the best of choices to make.

Covington kept talking trash and embracing the villain role. He once called Brazil a “dump” and calling Brazilians “filthy animals”, which was met with boos from the crowd. Rafael Dos Anjos failed, and so is Robbie Lawler – both lost to the fighter coming into the ring with WWE’s Kurt Angle’s music.

Until UFC 245 came in and Usman’s punch to the jaw of Covington made rounds around social media, both hilarious and politically-motivated ones:

With the loss, Covington suffered his second defeat in his MMA career, he lost his UFC Welterweight Championship, and he broke his jaw. Reports from MMA Fighting said that he suffered a non-displaced midline mandible fracture and he also lashed out his displeasure about the referee’s decision to stop the fight.

Now, the “Nigerian Nightmare” is also planning to do the same thing that his rival has done – bring the title to the White House.
