UFC Hall Of Famer Still Aiming For Return Fight With Fellow WEC Alumnus
KEY POINTS
- Urijah Faber remains hopeful in fighting Cub Swanson sometime soon
- Faber and Swanson rose to stardom in the now-defunct WEC
- Despite their age, seeing the two great finishers is going to be a draw
Former perennial UFC bantamweight title challenger Urijah Faber has not appeared in the Octagon since December 2019, but the competitor in him still wants to keep going.
Faber recently spoke with MMA Junkie about his future career plans, and part of it includes making an appearance at the open national tournament for wrestling.
However, a UFC fight is still very much on his mind and good friend Cub Swanson is in his sights.
“That one fight out there with Cub [Swanson] has been talked about. I haven’t heard anything from the UFC, but that’s an opportunity still. That’s more about me hitting a switch and deciding to go in that direction. I’m not staying too out of shape at all times,” Faber initially said as quoted by the outlet.
The UFC Hall of Famer and Swanson’s history with each other dates back to their time during the height of popularity of the bantamweight, lightweight and featherweight with the now-defunct WEC.
Swanson was the first to propose the legacy fight between them back in December 2021, with Faber openly entertaining the idea in January.
Both California natives have seen their fair share of wars throughout their illustrious careers with a combined experience of 86 fights and 44 finishes between them.
“To be honest, I have a hard time turning down a good time. There have been 11 or 12 guys who have called me out over the last couple of years. I would consider him somebody that it would be an honor to fight. He was talking about coming down to 135 (pounds) for the first time. I like that part of it,” Faber added.
Despite Faber turning 43 on May 14 and Swanson already being 38, seeing two of the most prolific finishers that the mixed martial arts scene has seen is going to create a buzz with ease.
The UFC only needs to make the fight official, and fans will surely be treated to a three-round strike-fest from both Faber and Swanson owing back to their combined seven Fight of the Night awards back in WEC.
