Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen did not take kindly to Jon Jones criticizing his famed trash talking.

Sonnen, now at Bellator, is regarded as one of the best trash talkers in the sport, but unlike Conor McGregor, has failed to back it up whenever he challenged for a title.

After dominating middleweight champion at the time Anderson Silva for four rounds in 2010, the American lost the fight in the fifth round when he was caught in a triangle choke.

Sonnen would then lose their 2012 rematch via TKO before suffering the same fate when he challenged Jones for the light heavyweight title a year later.

The 41-year-old will get another crack at a title if he defeats famed Russian MMA fighter Fedor Emilianenko in the semifinals of the Bellator heavyweight grand prix, that takes place Oct. 13 at Bellator 208.

Dagestan native Khabib Nurmagomedov meanwhile, will defend his lightweight title against McGregor next month as well at UFC 229, and when asked by a Russian outlet as to who will be bothered by the trash talking more, Jones responded bluntly.

"I think Chael Sonnen is the worst trash talker," Jones said, as per Bloody Elbow. "Just because a lot of the stuff he says is gibberish. Conor McGregor, when he talks trash there’s a lot of truth behind what he’s saying. I think Khabib will be under more pressure. Just because, he has a very dangerous fighter who usually backs up what he says. Where Chael Sonnen is known to talk trash and lose."

Sonnen would fire back Sunday night with a number of tweets directed at Jones.

The "Bad Guy" notably took aim at Jones' repeated suspensions due to failed drug tests and also brought up his hit-and-run accident in 2015 that saw Jones run a red light, collide with a car that had a pregnant woman inside, and then flee the scene.

Sonnen has failed drug tests himself and has admitted to use performance enhancing drugs in the past, but claimed Jones, who is currently in limbo after failing a drug test last year, makes him look like a clean fighter.

Although Sonnen revealed he won't be resorting to trash talk ahead of his fight next month, he clearly still has it in him based on these tweets. As for his fight against Emelianenko, Jones just doesn't see a way for Sonnen to win.

"I think Fedor wins this fight all over," Jones explained in the interview. "On the ground and on the feet. He’s just the better fighter. He has great jiu jitsu, better striking. He’s the better all-around fighter."

"If I was going to give Fedor any advice, it would be to work on his guillotine. Because Chael Sonnen is gonna shoot, and Chael Sonnen always shoots with his head on the same side. So work that guillotine, and work your triangles. I would also encourage Fedor to work on his get-up, so he’s not held down. And work on his cardio. Very important," he said.
