UFC President Comments On Paul vs. McGregor, Says Notorious Should Not Fight ‘Kids’
KEY POINTS
- Dana White is not interested in a Jake Paul vs. Conor McGregor fight
- White praised the Paul brothers for entering fighting sports
- Paul vs. McGregor could happen but not in the near future, White suggests
UFC president Dana White is perhaps in the best position to comment on whether a Jake Paul vs. Conor McGregor fight has any chance of happening. Although he admitted that it would cater to a certain market, it is a fight that will not be happening anytime soon, especially under his watch.
The UFC top brass reasoned that McGregor is one of the greatest fighters in the mixed martial arts world right now, and he believes he should not be fighting "kids." As far as he is concerned, there is a zero chance that a Paul vs. McGregor fight will materialize in the near future, TMZ reported.
"[Conor McGregor] is one of the greatest fighters on Earth right now. He shouldn't be fighting kids that have f-----g YouTube videos," White said.
As of this writing, McGregor has yet to respond to the jabs hurled his way by the YouTuber. After knocking out former NBA player Nate Robinson recently, Paul took aim at some of the big names in the mixed martial arts world.
Aside from McGregor, he also called out Dillon Danis and Ben Askren. In a previous report, retired UFC star Daniel Cormier said that if the fight were to be done under boxing rules, the 23-year-old may have better chances against Danis than McGregor. Askren is retired and has not shown any indication of wanting to fight again.
White lauded Jake and his brother Logan Paul for invading the fight world and injecting some life into it. But as far as the UFC top brass is concerned, timing is essential. There is a market for such fights, but it is something he is not interested in arranging.
"There's a market for these kinda fights. It's just not what I do," White said. "There will be a day when Conor McGregor could do these types of fights and make a bunch of money."
Seeing as how McGregor is still at the prime of his career, it may take a couple of more years, if White is to be believed. But then again, the former UFC champion has been known to do what he wants, when he wants.
McGregor is set to face Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 in January. After that, he has been tipped to face Manny Pacquiao in a boxing match. There is also a possibility of a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov, although the Russian needs to unretire first.
