UFC Rumors: Anthony Pettis Dream Match Could Force Conor McGregor To Unretire
As far as Dana White is concerned, Conor McGregor is not officially retired. In fact, the UFC top brass reveals he has plans to sit down with the Irishman with hopes of finding other ways to make “The Notorious” happy.
It was just last month when Conor McGregor had announced his retirement from the mixed martial arts scene. While most MMA fighters have done that on several occasions, they end up returning at some point. Also, critics feel that the retirement pitch of the Irishman was meant to twist the UFC arm since he wanted to a piece of the organization, MMA Mania reported.
Some believe that the demand of McGregor may be too much. But White believes there are other ways to appease the Irishman although the UFC top brass did not get into detail. Could that be in the form of a blockbuster match?
At the rate that things are going on right now, that looms as the only plausible recourse. But will that be enough to straighten out things – including the real score on McGregor?
“I think there’s some things that Conor wants. I think that Conor wants to get together, face-to-face, he and I, and we probably will in the next couple of weeks to get this thing figured out. He’s stuck on this thing where he wants a piece of the ownership. I think there’s other ways we can make him happy,” said White to 8 Las Vegas.
So far, matches against either Nate Diaz or Khabib Nurmagomedov have been suggested. However, nothing has gone beyond the speculations so it will be interesting if these are among the options that would be on the table.
Other names have been likely crossed out for now. This includes Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway, both set to face off for the interim title at UFC 236. Tony Fergusson is a possible opponent once he is up and about as well.
One fighter who took a swipe at McGregor is Anthony Pettis. Obviously aware that the former UFC champion has retired, Pettis said that if ever a dream fight between them happens, it would be a bad idea for the Irishman.
"Man, I wouldn't talk him outta retirement. If someone wants to retire, don't get in the Octagon with me," said Pettis in a report by TMZ.
But like most, Pettis believes that the retirement angle is nothing more but a threat (on the shares issue). Should it be true, he says that all the way down to face McGregor. However, it all depends if White has that in mind.
