“Hey, guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been,” McGregor tweeted.
With McGregor’s announcement, speculation to join WWE has increased further for the past few days. The idea of a legitimate MMA fighter jumping to the professional industry is nothing new.
In the 90s, UFC legend Ken Shamrock was pushed to the WWE’s main storyline with a feud against Shawn Michaels. Other UFC greats have also made appearances to the WWE brand and have experienced big pushes as well.
In the women’s division, Ronda Rousey was booked as a dominant WWE Raw Women’s Champion during her stint. The Beast himself Brock Lesnar has seen multiple championships for the industry. Several others such as Cain Velasquez have had their share of screentime inside the ring.
Having someone of McGregor’s caliber is perfect for WWE given that one of professional wrestling’s main components is the aspect of pulling off a good promo. These are the altercations outside the ring that develop the wrestler’s character of either as a lovable athlete or a despised heel.
The natural manner of how McGregor instills intimidation and fear against his opponents is considered a big part of the Notorious One and fits well for the WWE.
Per Give Me Sport, signing McGregor to WWE is a possible route given that rival promotion All Elite Wrestling is currently working a storyline that involves boxing Hall of Famer Mike Tyson.
While there has been tension between WWE superstars and McGregor, fans believe he will still be a good fit in the industry.
It will be interesting to see if WWE is able to sign McGregor to a deal. While the Irishman has openly mocked the business and Vince McMahon, it would still be a big move to see McGregor one day in the ring.
