‘The Umbrella Academy’ Premiere Date, Cast And More Details About Netflix Show
“The Umbrella Academy” is premiering on Netflix this Friday, Feb. 15. Find out what the show is all about and meet the cast below before tuning in the day after Valentine’s Day.
What is “The Umbrella Academy”?
“The Umbrella Academy” is a show about a family of superheroes with bizarre powers who call themselves The Umbrella Academy. Technically, the kids are not related since they were just adopted by millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves, also called The Monocle, with the goal of saving the world.
Due to their dysfunctional relationship, the team separated. But the news about Hargreeves’ death causes six of the children, who are now all grown up, to reunite. The reunion isn’t as happy as one would expect, however, due mainly to their diverse personalities. Nevertheless, they will still need to come together in the face of an imminent global apocalypse.
Where did the show come from?
The new Netflix series is actually an adaptation of a comic book series and graphic novels of the same name, according to Deadline. The series was created and written by former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and drawn by artist Gabriel Bá. The first issue was released on Sept. 19, 2007.
According to Way, family and trauma are the two main themes tackled in his comic book series, so expect the same thing when you watch “The Umbrella Academy” this week. The singer noted that the characters go through different stages of coping and healing as they deal with certain events in their lives.
Who are the cast?
The cast of the show is led by Ellen Page, who plays Vanya or The White Violin, and Tom Hopper, who portrays Luther or Spaceboy. Robert Sheehan will give life to Klaus or The Séance while Aiden Gallagher is acting as Number Five, who is otherwise referred to as The Boy.
Emmy Raver-Lampman will play Allison or The Rumor and portraying Diego aka The Kraken is David Castañeda. Colm Feore was tapped to appear as Sir Reginald. Meanwhile, Mary J. Blige is starring as notorious Neo-Nazi criminal Cha-Cha. Other cast include Adam Godley as Pogo, Kate Walsh as The Handler, Ashley Madekwe as Detective Patch and John Magaro as Leonard Peabody.
Is Gerard Way involved in the Netflix show?
Yes, Way and Bá are co-executive producers. In addition, Way and Blige have collaborated on new music that will be featured in the series.
In an interview with Billboard last month, Way said that he got his inspiration for the song while watching the first scene involving Page and Gallagher’s characters being shot for the show.
