KEY POINTS

A video featuring a dummy unit of iPhone 13 Pro Max suggests that the next Apple flagship phone will come with a smaller notch and wider cameras.
A 13-minute video from Unbox Therapy seemingly confirms previous reports that the iPhone 13 could come with a reduced notch size. The said video, which was uploaded on YouTube and has so far garnered more than 900,000 views as of writing, gives a glimpse of what Apple’s next flagship phone could look like.
Dummy units usually come out earlier than the device launch date. They are regularly shared with case and accessory makers to give them enough preparation time. They come through schematics that circulate among the Apple supply chain ahead of release, reported 9to5 Mac.
The unboxing video shows the comparison between the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the current iPhone 12 Pro Max. Several parts of the two higher-tier devices look almost similar, except that there are some improvements on the iPhone 13.
The notch of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is noticeably smaller than its predecessor's. It can also be seen that the earpiece has moved to the fringe due to the notch shrinkage. The iPhone 12 Pro Max earpiece is currently located at the center of the notch.
The smaller notch has also caused the components of the TrueDepth camera to be closer to one another right below the repositioned earpiece. This has been the first major change for the TrueDepth camera since it launched on iPhone X back in 2017, MacRumors said in a report.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max dummy unit has three rear camera lenses, which are slightly bigger than the current iPhone 12 Pro Max lenses. Reports suggest that this could be because of the sensor-shift optical image stabilization for Ultrawide lenses as hinted at by previous rumors.
Large camera lenses allow more light to reach the digital sensors, resulting in better photos.
Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable Apple analyst, said in previous reports that the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max can be expected to go from 5P (f/2.4) and fixed focus (FF) to 6P (f/1.8) and autofocus (AF) with the upgraded ultra-wide cameras.
The analyst also hinted that the upcoming iPhone 13 lineup could feature support for a 120 Hz refresh rate as seen in the iPad Pro ProMotion display.
