‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Spoilers: What Happened In the Season 1 Finale? Recap Before The Season 2 Premiere
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is about to return for Season 2, but before binge-watching the new episodes, viewers will want to remember where the first season left off. Kimmy’s captor, Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, had a pretty easy trial and was about to go free. During a bachelorette party for another ex-hostage, Kimmy goes back to the bunker and finds evidence that helps her put the Reverend behind bars for good.
Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) and the other hostages broke into the Reverend’s (Jon Hamm) bunker for evidence against him, but they don’t find anything incriminating. They only find a hilarious tape of the Reverend auditioning for “The Apprentice.”
They get locked in and discover that Donna Maria (Sol Miranda) has actually been lying and can speak perfect English. She just didn’t want the Reverend to know, and she’s been lying to the public to help sell the brand. Kimmy is angry that Donna wouldn’t testify against the Reverend in English but knows that doesn’t really matter if they miss the last trial date.
Things start looking up once Kimmy realizes that the rat she once saw was from an air vent, and they can use the same method to escape. All four women climb on top of each other’s shoulders to get out, and Officer Randy (Tim Blake Nelson) finds them as he is being saved from a tree by a firefighter.
Kimmy and the women get to the courthouse, but they still don’t have much evidence. Lawyers Marcia Clark (Tina Fey) and Chris Darden (Jerry Minor) are useless. Kimmy plays the VHS tape that they found in hopes that it’ll give her some time to think of something, but it turns out the tape is the evidence she needs.
The Reverend’s “Apprentice” audition was filmed on June 5, 2006, but he claimed that the apocalypse would be June 6. It proves that he didn’t really believe in the end of the world, and he is finally convicted.
While Kimmy is in Indiana, her friends follow her. Lillian (Carol Kane) goes to Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) to find Kimmy, and they decide to go on a road trip to Indiana to the trial. Jacqueline’s divorce was just finalized, so she is questioning everything in her life. She decides that she should embrace her heritage.
She flashes back to her upbringing with her Native American family and suddenly remembers how to tell what direction she is going in when she and Lillian get lost. When they see a school marching band with the Indians as their mascot, Jacqueline decides to fight them, and the band’s school rivals join in to turn it into a brawl.
Lillian and Jacqueline arrive just after the end of the trial, and Jacqueline realizes that she has to take out her blue contact lenses and go home to her family. She promises that she’ll see Kimmy again and then steals a police car on her way home. It looks like those contacts were prescription lenses.
The only person who wasn’t at the trial was Kimmy’s love interest, Dong (Ki Hong Lee). Kimmy discovers she has a ton of missed calls from him, but she didn’t pick up the phone in time. Immigration found Dong, so he got married to Sonja (Suzan Perry), an older woman from their GED class.
It’s Titus’ (Titus Burgess) storyline that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats in the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Season 1 finale. He has gone viral after his awkward TV interview. Though he is warned about famed being a double-edged sword, he thinks it’s great that people are paying attention to him. He discovers the downside when Vonda (Pernell Walker), his wife, finds him.
In Season 2, Kimmy will be even closer to Titus and Lillian. While Jacqueline is still in the picture, Kimmy will have a new boss when she gets a job at a Christmas store. That will obviously bring her plenty of joy, but she will also have to deal with some things from her past that aren’t just related to the cult. She has some issues with her mother that still affect her. Find out more about Season 2 here.
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Season 2 will be released on Netflix on Friday, April 15.
