Undefeated World Boxing Champ Explains How He'll Beat Canelo Alvarez, 'Aging' GGG
An undefeated world boxing champ boasts about how he will defeat both Canelo Alvarez and GGG.
WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is optimistic that his partnership with promoter Eddie Hearn will finally link him to the biggest names in boxing. As early as now, Saunders is already claiming that he could beat two of the best fighters in the world today.
One of the names at the top of his list is former unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. According to Saunders, he believes Golovkin is no longer the same fighter after reviewing his two phenomenal bouts with Mexican superstar Canelo.
In a interview with Boxing Scene, Saunders explained how he would beat 37-year-old Golovkin. "Seeing Golovkin and Canelo fight, everybody was raving, but I thought: 'I can beat them'. If I can't beat a 37-year-man (Golovkin), I'm 29 and in my prime, then something is wrong. I am confident I would beat him widely,” he said.
Saunders also blasted Alvarez’s performance against Golovkin in their first meeting. He claimed Alvarez did not show any signs of improvement during the fight, and he would do a lot better against Golovkin. He is also confident that a win against Golovkin will surely place him in a superfight with Canelo.
"The first fight against Canelo I thought [Golovkin] won. Canelo didn't improve but the training camp took its toll [on Golovkin]. I'd fight Golovkin at whatever weight he wants. I could show people around the world how easily I could out-box him. I would do a better job than Canelo and people would call for that fight after," Saunders claimed.
Meanwhile, Golovkin’s appeal for a third fight with Canelo is still possible. According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, he feels that both fighters are willing to fight each other and if the fans really want to see it, it will eventually happen.
"I strongly feel that we will see a third fight. I strongly feel that being the warrior that Canelo is, and obviously 'GGG' being willing to fight Canelo, again I think the demand is there from the fans. I don't know how soon we'll see it, but I think eventually we will," De La Hoya said.
At this point, Golovkin still has a fight to win in October. Golovkin is set to face Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight title at Madison Square Garden. The outcome of the fight will surely help determine how things will play out for Canelo and Golovkin.
