United Technologies in nearing a purchase of General Electric Co's fire alarm and security systems unit for at least $1.8 billion, and a deal could be announced as early as Thursday, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

Bloomberg cited two people familiar with the matter.

A United Technologies spokesman declined to comment. A GE spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment.
