University Of Kentucky Student Dies From 'Presumed Alcohol Toxicity,' Found Unresponsive At Fraternity
A University of Kentucky freshman was found unresponsive Monday night at a fraternity house, according to officials.
Thomas Lofton Hazelwood, 18, was declared dead after he was taken to UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
The cause of death was presumed alcohol toxicity and the manner of death was ruled an accident, according to a statement Tuesday from the Fayette County Coroner.
"Foul play is not suspected, but police are investigating the circumstances of his death," the university said in a statement. "The thoughts of the entire UK community are with his family and all those who knew the student at this time."
University police were called around 6:22 p.m. ET and the time of death was listed as 7:06 p.m. A member of the fraternity had called 9-1-1.
Hazelwood was a member of the FarmHouse fraternity. He was from Henderson, Kentucky, and majored in agricultural economics.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Thomas 'Lofton' Hazelwood, a new member of the University of Kentucky chapter of FarmHouse Fraternity. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones as well as the entire community. We have encouraged all members and new members to cooperate with any investigation prompted by Mr. Hazelwood’s death," Farm House Fraternity CEO Christian Wiggins said in a statement to the Herald-Leader.
