The University of Nebraska–Lincoln said in a tweet late Monday that an armed suspect was on campus. The university added a description of the suspect on its Twitter feed but did not give any further information on the situation on the ground.

A report by KLKN TV, an affiliate of ABC News, said that the Lied Center for Performing Arts on campus has been put under lockdown. Hundreds of students are reportedly in the area to attend the weeklong Thespian festival, a celebration of student achievement in the arts.

The university has since announced on its website that local police responded to the incident and cleared the area around 14th and West. However, the university asked students to continue to avoid the area.

The university is one of the oldest higher-education institutions west of the Mississippi River, and began awarding doctoral degrees in 1896.

This is a developing story.
