KEY POINTS

  • Bloomberg seems to relish taking personal shots at Trump
  • The Democratic candidate's campaign said Trump “lies about everything"
  • He's also kept saying Trump is a fake billionaire

Former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg, the only Democratic Party nominee for president gutsy enough to personally insult Donald Trump, went after the President again after the latter unloaded on him.

The Bloomberg campaign on Sunday blasted Trump as someone who “lies about everything: his fake hair, his obesity, and his spray-on tan." Earlier, Trump assailed Bloomberg on Twitter, saying “Many of the ads you are watching were paid for by Mini Mike Bloomberg. He is going nowhere, just wasting his money, but he is getting the DNC to rig the election against Crazy Bernie.”

Trump's calling Bloomberg "Mini Mike" is a reference to Bloomberg's height of 173 cm (5'8"). Trump has also made the unfounded claim Bloomberg stood on a box so he could look as tall as the other Democrats during their debates.

In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Trump was asked by host Sean Hannity how he felt about Bloomberg, To which Trump replied, "Uh, very little. I just think of little. You know, now he wants a box for the debates to stand on. OK, it’s OK, there’s nothing wrong. You can be short. Why should he get a box to stand on, OK? He wants a box for the debates. Why should he be entitled to that? Really. Does that mean everyone else gets a box? ... I would love to run against Bloomberg."

Mike didn't take that insult lying down. His campaign assailed Trump for his fake hair, his obesity, and his spray-on tan. Bloomberg himself delivered a stinging rebuke to Trump.

“I stand twice as tall as he does on the stage that matters,” declared Bloomberg. “This is what happens when somebody like me rises in the polls. All of a sudden the other candidates get scared and I think Donald Trump knows that I can beat him. And that’s why he comes back with those kinds of comments.”

Bloomberg adviser Tim O'Brien also took aim at the divider-in-chief on MSNBC.

"What I’ve said to people is when you get inside Donald Trump’s head, all you’re going to discover that you find there is a putter, a cheeseburger, a porn video, and somebody else’s credit card."

These are attacks the likes of which none of Bloomberg's other competitors for the nomination have leveled against Trump. Democrats have long trod the high road, refusing to descend to Trump's insults and bullying rhetoric.

More than any other Democrat, Bloomberg has relentlessly attacked Trump the man and not Trump and his policies. Bloomberg has packed his speeches with swipes at Trump.

Among Bloomberg's favorite remarks is about how Trump is a fake billionaire who wouldn't have gotten where he was without his daddy's billions.
