Austria’s Dominic Thiem has stunned the world by winning the final of the 2020 U.S. Open against Germany’s Alexander Zverev. In the process, the 27-year-old Tennis player has become the fifth player to win a Grand Slam final in the open era after losing the first two sets of the game.

Apart from Thiem, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi, and Gastón Gaudio have previously achieved the monumental feat. However, all the players won their respective finals at the French Open while Thiem has become the first player in the open era to win a U.S Open Final after being two sets down, ATP Tour reported.

Thiem defeated Zverev 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6(6) in the thrilling final and claimed his first-ever Grand Slam title. He is also the second Austrian player after Thomas Muster to emerge victorious in a major championship.

Zverev was on top for the first two sets of the game and smashed four aces in the first set as he displayed a phenomenal serve and volley game. The German won the first set in just 30 minutes. On the other hand, Thiem was sloppy as he struck three double faults.

Zverev won the second set easily and it looked like the 23-year-old is on his way to win his first Grand Slama title. However, Thiem put up a thrilling display on the court to make a stunning comeback.

Thiem outclassed the German in the third and fourth sets to set up an exhilarating final at the Flushing Meadows.

Zverev found himself serving for the match as he took a 5-3 lead in the final set. But Thiem fought back and won the next three games to serve for the championship. The nervousness got better off Thiem as he lost the game and the set was tied at 6-6.

The Austrian won the match after playing a beautiful passing shot for the third championship point. Zverev failed to keep the ball in play and Thiem collapsed on the floor as he clinched his maiden U.S. Open title.

The German was in tears as he came back on the court to deliver the runners-up speech and congratulated Thiem for the victory. He also thanked his team and parents for always supporting him, promising them that one day he will win the trophy, the BBC reported.

“I don’t know where to start. I would like to congratulate Dominic on the first of many Grand Slam titles. It was a tough battle. I want to thank my parents, I wish one day I can bring the trophy home,” the BBC quoted Zverev, as saying.

Meanwhile, Thiem, in his speech, reflected upon the friendship he and Zverev share since 2014.

“I would also like to start with you, Sascha (Zverev). We started to know each other in 2014 when we were both ranked 100th or something and straight away we developed a great friendship. It is amazing how far our journey brought us. I wish we could have two winners today, we both deserve it,” Thiem said.
