US Open: Mike Bryan Fined For Gun Gesture; Novak Djokovic Booed By Fans
American Tennis player Mike Bryan was fined after making a gun gesture using his racket and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic got booed by fans.
Bryan just made one of the most unforgettable moments in US Open. In his second round doubles victory over Federico Delbonis and Roberto Carballés Baena, Bryan turned his racket upside down to imitate a firearm and pointed it at both a line judge and the chair umpire Mariana Alves.
As a result, the 41-year-old received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct for his antics.
Bryan, on the other hand, was a bit surprised after learning about the sanction, Give Me Sport noted.
“Just tell me what I did real quick? What was the gesture,” Bryan queried.
Alves had a simple yet precise response for Bryan’s queries. According to Alves, what Bryan did was “inappropriate.”
“The gesture that you did. You did it to the line umpire and did it to me.You did with your racket like it was a gun. I don’t think that was appropriate,” Alves said.
While some might argue that Alves was just over reacting to Bryan’s gesture, some believe that it was not a good timing given the tragic events of Saturday afternoon in Texas. It the said tragedy, seven people were killed, the latest of a number of mass shootings to occur in the US.
After realizing what he just did, Bryan apologized to everybody. According to the him, the act wasn’t intended to make fun of the officials and judges.
“I apologize for any offence I may have caused. We won the point and the gesture was meant to be playful,” he began. “But given the recent news and political climate I understand how my gesture could be viewed as insensitive. I promise that I will never do anything like this again,” Bryan promised.
However, Bryan still received a £8,222 ($9,904.26) fine. This is the highest fine that has been given out at this year’s US Open on the men’s side.
Meanwhile, Djokovic was booed by fans in attendance after retiring during his match with Stan Wawrinka. Djokovic was down two sets when he suddenly approached Wawrinka and embraced him while trailing 6-4, 7-5, 2-1.
The Serbian’s sportsmanship gesture apparently was his way of withdrawing from the match.
Prior to Wawrinka match, Djokovic has been bothered by a left shoulder injury all week. The Tennis star took a medical time-out after dropping the second set, and three games into the third, he decided enough was enough.
Despite the hostile reception, Djokovic waved to the crowd as he left.
