Police in the small town of Grantsville, Utah, said Monday that a teenaged boy accused of shooting and killing four family members and wounding a fifth on Friday night had surrendered peacefully.

Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, 52, the mother of the family, was shot and killed, along with her three children: Alexis, 15, Mathew, 14, and Maylan, 12. Colin Haynie, 50, the father of the family, was wounded in the shooting and has since been released from the hospital.

Police reportedly were called about the shooting at about 7 p.m.

The alleged shooter, whose name has not been released due to his status as a minor, was arrested at Mountain West Medical Center after he was driven there with Colin Haynie. The driver was not involved in the shooting.

The boy, who is being held a youth detention facility, did not suffer injuries. Police confirmed that he is related to the victims.

The alleged shooter faces four counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted aggravated murder and multiple firearms charges. He has refused to speak with detectives.

“There are a lot of ends to be tied up, there are a lot of questions that we would like to answer. Unfortunately, there’s some questions we may never be able to answer,” Grantsville police Cpl. Rhonda Fields said on Monday. “The biggest question that everybody has is: Why?”

Attendees at a candlelight vigil on Monday talked openly about the alleged shooter and referred to him as an older brother.

A Facebook fundraiser for funeral costs was started Saturday.

“Our hearts go out to the families, loved ones and the close-knit neighborhood affected by this emotional, tragic incident,” Grantsville Mayor Brent Marshall said in a statement.

Grantsville has a population of 11,000 and is located about 35 miles west of Salt Lake City.
