Valentine's Day, which is celebrated on Feb. 14, has some dark origins. The association between the cold winter month and romance harks back to a pagan festival known as Lupercalia, which began with an animal sacrifice then ritual slapping of women with the animal’s skin and blood to bestow fertility for the coming year.

In the 5th century, in an effort to Christianize the pagan tradition, Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14 Saint Valentine’s Day. And there isn’t one “Saint Valentine.” There were reportedly several canonized by the church. According to legend, one of them was a defiant Roman priest that continued to perform marriage ceremonies despite the emperor’s explicit request not to. Sentenced to death, he reportedly fell in love with his jailer’s daughter. On Feb. 14, the day of his execution, he left her note signed “from your Valentine.”
