'Valheim' Portal Guide: How To Fast Travel And Teleport
KEY POINTS
- "Valheim" players can fast travel across vast distances using the game's Portal system
- Portals require Greydwarf Eyes, Fine Wood and Surtling Cores
- Two Portals need to have the same tag in order to travel between them
The game worlds in “Valheim” can be incredibly large. Players will eventually discover that just one home base isn’t enough if they want to explore everything that the game has to offer. Instead of running long distances between their settlements, players can opt to create Portals around their bases so they can save time and effort.
Portals function as “Valheim’s” fast travel system. They’re the fastest way to get around the map without having to run across it or risk death via random monster encounters. But these Portals can only be created after making decent progress into the game.
Here’s a guide on how to create Portals and how to travel between them in “Valheim.”
Gather materials
Players will need to gather 20x Greydwarf Eyes, 20x Fine Wood and 2x Surtling Cores. Note that these are only enough for one Portal.
Greydwarf Eyes are dropped by the eponymous Greydwarves found all over the game world. They shouldn’t be too hard to find, but for maximum efficiency, it would be best to hunt them down in the Dark Forest biome. Greydwarves typically roam in groups, and players may encounter a Greydwarf spawner out in the Dark Forest, making for even faster harvesting.
Fine Wood drops from Birch and Oak trees. These trees are sturdier than Beech trees, and players will need a Bronze Axe to cut them down. Fine Wood also unlocks the Portal recipe.
Surtling Cores can be found inside Burial Chambers. They can be identified by their bright red glow and are often found resting on small pedestals. Be careful, however, as Burial Chambers are guarded by Skeletons that can easily swarm unprepared players. Surtlings also spawn around Swamps and their cores can be gathered directly after defeating them.
Building and using portals
Once the materials are gathered, players will be able to create Portals on their bases.
Equip a Hammer and under the “Misc” tab, select the Portal. Pick a spot near your base’s Workbench and place the Portal accordingly. Do the same on a second location so the first Portal will have an exit.
Once a Portal is placed, interact with it to set a tag. A Portal will only work if there is another Portal with a matching tag. Once a Portal lights up, simply walk through it to instantly teleport to the other end.
There are no distance limits when it comes to Portals, but there are some materials that cannot be teleported. These items have a small indicator on their icons. Make sure to plan accordingly.
