KEY POINTS

  • Victor Oladipo spurned an opportunity to be a starter with the Wizards by re-signing with the Heat
  • The Wizards will try to see if Monte Morris and Bradley Beal can co-exist in their ever-changing backcourt
  • Oladipo re-signing a new deal with the Heat could be due to unfinished business

Two-time All-Star guard Victor Oladipo gave a credible showing during the 2021-22 NBA season, a reason why multiple teams took interest in him.

Among those teams include the Washington Wizards.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Wizards had their sights on the 2018 NBA Most Improved Player.

Better yet, Washington was allegedly considering handing Oladipo a starting opportunity which the All-Star guard allegedly passed up.

Had that happened, Oladipo may have ended up being the starting shooting guard for the Wizards alongside Bradley Beal.

It would have made sense as well since the second overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft had a chance to return to his hometown.

Instead, Oladipo opted to re-sign with the Miami Heat and agreed to a two-year, $18.2 million deal.

Oladipo has played sparingly since suffering a quad tendon injury in 2019.

He somehow managed to rekindle his old fire during the 2020-21 season, splitting his time between the Indiana Pacers and Houston Rockets.

The Rockets dangled a $45.2 million contract, the most they could offer to retain him.

After turning it down, Oladipo ended up getting traded to the Heat.

However, he suffered another setback after suffering a season-ending surgery to repair his right quadriceps tendon.

Moreover, Oladipo may have some unfinished business with the Heat, having played only 12 regular-season games and 15 post-season appearances.

In last year's playoffs, the 2018 NBA steals leader normed 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 24.5 minutes of action.

As for the Wizards, they moved on from that alleged plan and ended up signing Monte Morris.

They acquired the 27-year-old guard from the Denver Nuggets last July, in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith.

Morris is owed $18.9 million for the next two years.

Aside from the 6-foot-2 guard, the Wizards also added Delon Wright.

In Morris, the Wizards have a player who so far holds career averages of 10.5 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.3 rebounds in 280 games with the Nuggets.

His playoff numbers are not that far off with the 6-foot-2 guard, norming 9.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.7 rebounds.
