Arsenal received a satisfying Premier League victory as the Gunners gave Wigan Athletic a 4-0 thumping at DW Stadium on Saturday.

Wigan were competitive with the London giants in the first half, but things fell apart near the half-hour mark.

Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta scored with a right-footed swinging kick from distance that evaded goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi's grasp. Moments later, centre back Thomas Vermaelen headed the ball in off a Robin van Persie corner-kick cross.

Vermaelen was well-marked by the Wigan defense, but he simply out-jumped his defenders. It was Arsenal's first Premier-League goal off a corner in 179 attempts, according to BBC.

Near the one-hour mark, van Persie would use a crossover and a fine shot that was blocked by Al Habsi, but winger Gervinho was there with the follow to put the Gunners ahead, 3-0.

In the 78th minute, Theo Walcott accepted a long ball that he advanced into the box, and then got the assist when he set up van Persie for the Dutch forward's first goal of the match.

Van Persie continues to be one of the most explosive players in the world, and has 13 goals on the season.

Arsenal controlled the ball for 65 percent of the match and took 16 shots, with five on goal. Wigan took eight shots, with three on goal.

The Gunners have vaulted to fifth place in the Premier League, while Wigan are in last place.
