VIDEO Best Goals Of World Cup 2014: Lionel Messi, Robin Van Persie, Jermaine Jones, Other Amazing Scores In Group Stage [Top 10]
The group stage of World Cup 2014 has been filled with a number of fantastic goals, making this perhaps the most enthralling World Cup in decades.
In only the second day of the tournament, the Netherlands received a spectacular header from Robin van Persie to get the scoring in what turned out to be a lopsided victory over Spain.
Lionel Messi, arguably the best player on the planet, has risen to the occasion at the World Cup to complement his extraordinary career with Barcelona. Messi failed to make much of a scoring impact in 2010, but has silenced some critics with some fantastic shots in the opening round. His sensational goals have lifted Argentina to three victories in three matches.
Perhaps the most unexpected was the equalizer from Jermaine Jones. The U.S. defensive midfielder provided a thrilling strike from distance against Portugal. Later in the match, Cristiano Ronaldo had the assist of the tournament in a long cross to Varela, who headed the ball in among several U.S. defenders.
While Australia was eliminated from the World Cup after two matches, Tim Cahill gave the Socceroos something to brag about with a spectacular deep shot against the Netherlands.
