VIDEO Boston Marathon 2016: Who Won The Big Race?
Lemi Berhanu Hayle was the first man to cross the finish line on Monday afternoon, winning the 2016 Boston Marathon. He finished in two hours, 12 minutes and 44 seconds.
Berhanu, 21, became the third native of Ethiopia in the last four years to win the race. He edged out Lelisa Desisa, who was last year’s winner. Desisa came in second place at 2:13:32, finishing just ahead of Yemane Adhane Tsegay, who’s time of 2:14:02 was good enough for third place.
Winning the 120th running of the Boston Marathon, Berhanu finished nearly 10 seconds behind the course record, which was set by Kenya’s Geoffrey Mutai in 2011. Monday’s race marked the slowest first-place time in nine years. Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot needed over two hours and 14 minutes to complete the marathon in 2007, winning the race for a third time.
Ethiopia’s Atsede Baysa won the race on the women’s side. She crossed the finish line at 2:29:19, finishing with the slowest winning time since 2012. Baysa was 44 seconds ahead of Tirfi Tsegaye, who finished in second place. Kenya’s Joyce Chepkirui came in third place at 2:30:50.
Baysa’s win ends a streak of five straight wins for women from Kenya. Last year’s winner, Caroline Rotich, dropped out of the race this morning with an ankle injury. Rita Jeptoo won the race in 2014, doing so for a second time in a row and third time overall.
It's the first time that Ethiopian runners have swept the Boston Marathon.
