A Premier League soccer match Sunday between Manchester United and Liverpool was postponed after protestors of the Glazer family stormed Old Trafford in Manchester, England.

The planned protest started at the Lowry Hotel and then moved to the stadium around noon local time. Within an hour, fans made their way onto the field.

Green and gold flares were set off in the protest.

"Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest. However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger. We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations," Manchester United said in a statement.

The Premier League also issued a statement shortly after the protests escalated.

"Following the security breach at Old Trafford, the Manchester United vs. Liverpool game has been postponed. This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities,” the statement read.

"The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance. We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches. Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification,” the Premier League said.

Police intervened in the protests. Two officers were injured and one suffered severe injuries.

"We have launched an investigation and we will be working closely alongside partners to ensure we establish the full circumstances surrounding today's events and prosecute those responsible,” the Greater Manchester Police Department stated.

Club supporters are upset with the Glazers over the proposed European Super League (ESL), which would give elite clubs midweek games and more travel.

A large contingent of United supporters have been critical of the Glazer family for their upper management decisions.

There has been no new date announced for the Manchester United-Liverpool match.
