VIDEO Rafael Nadal Wins In Monte Carlo: Highlights Of King Of Clay vs. Albert Ramos-Vinolas Ahead Of 2017 French Open
Rafael Nadal continued his march toward Roland Garros, breezing to a victory over fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1 6-3 in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday.
It was a monumental victory for the clay-court specialist, who has regained his form in 2017 after a series of setbacks in 2015 and 2016. With the win, Nadal became the first men's tennis player in the Open era to win the same title 10 times. The victory represented his 50th career clay-court title and 70th overall title.
Nadal, currently ranked No. 7, had little trouble holding off Ramos-Vinolas, a 15th seed and ranked No. 24. The 30-year-old ripped some trademark backhand winners to complete the victory in just 76 minutes.
After the match, Nadal acknowledged his outstanding career achievement in Monaco.
“It really is unbelievable,” said Nadal. “To win 10 times at such an important event like Monte Carlo is something difficult to describe my feelings. Every year has been a different feeling. At the same time, it is always a unique moment, every time, I have this trophy with me."
Up next for Nadal is a shot at winning a 10th French Open title. The Grand Slam's most accomplished player has not won in Paris since 2014.
The French Open begins on May 28. Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the two favorites at +200 odds.
