A shocking surveillance video has captured a fatal attack on a 70-year-old Chicago grandmother. The elderly woman was ambushed and shot dead by two gunmen while she was waiting in her car for the grocery store where she worked to open.

The victim, identified as Yvonne Ruzich, was a retired employee of the Department of Streets and Sanitation. She worked a couple of days a week at the Baltimore Food store near 133rd Street and Baltimore Avenue, where she usually arrived before dawn.

On Monday, shortly before 4.30 a.m., Ruzich was waiting for the grocery store to open while sitting in her car when two masked men pulled up their car and walked towards her vehicle. Within seconds they pointed a gun at Ruzich and opened fire, New York Post reported.

The video of the attack released by the Chicago police showed Ruzich initially driving away but she soon crashed into a street sign and her car came to a stop. The two assailants then caught up with her and shot her multiple times.

Ruzich was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The victim’s stepson who often stops by to talk to her at the grocery store watched the crime happen before his eyes, WLS-TV reported.

Police have not yet determined a motive behind the shocking attack.

Friends and family described Ruzich as one of the kind and well-liked in the community. "She was the opposite of that evil that took her," said her daughter Karla. "She was my mom and had a piece of so many other people. Just standing here alone. People who come in for their morning coffee knew my mom."

"She was the face, she was the person of Baltimore Foods when you went in, which I just saw her Friday," city Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza told WMAQ-TV. "Every single person that came in here, she made them feel special."

Ruzich’s boyfriend Phil McGivney said: "I don't know what to do with my life now. I lost my best friend." He described her as a loving and caring woman who made sure everyone was taken care of.

No one is in custody yet in relation to the shooting incident as police continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call Area Two detectives at 312-747-8271.
