VIDEO: SUV Loses Control, Spins and Falls Off California Bridge Killing 4, Including Pregnant Woman
In an accident that took place Tuesday night (June 15) on the Carquinez Bridge in Crockett, California, an SUV lost control, spun, and veered off the barrier at least 200 feet underneath, killing the driver and the passengers.
Dashcam footage from the following vehicle appeared to show the distressed SUV before the fatal crash.
The vehicle was driving eastbound on Interstate 80, just east of Pomona Street before losing control and plummeting onto a parked train below, KTVU-TV reported.
Officers at the Contra Costa County received calls at around 8:40 p.m. about the Infiniti SUV crash and identified the victims as Kyle Erickson (19), Christopher Mata (21), Cecilia Ayala (22), and Perla Navarro (19), who was two-month pregnant.
Navarro was a fresh graduate from Golden Gate Community School in Rodeo and was pregnant with her first child, her family told KTVU-TV. “She was always very loving, warm, and nurturing,” Veronica Martinez, Navarro’s mother, said. “I’m not going to be able to talk to her or see her walk through the door, or hold my grandbaby.”
Navarro planned to study psychology and was already taking college courses. “She wanted to work with kids who suffered depression or were at-risk,” Martinez added.
The California Highway Patrol in Solano County is investigating the crash and the exact cause is not yet ascertained. “We’re not sure what the cause was,” Officer David Harvey told KTVU-TV. We don't know if it was due to high speed or related to traffic issues.”
This incident marks this year’s third case of a vehicle going over the concrete barrier on the Carquinez Bridge, according to the station.
In a similar incident on June 7, an SUV with a couple and their toddler was hit on the side by a vehicle running a red light on a four-way intersection in Chicago, causing it to overturn and skid toward the sidewalk. On hearing the trapped passengers’ screams, several residents ran to the spot and drivers got out of their cars to offer help. The group then turned the SUV back upright, broke the glass to help the family escape. The responding officials from the police and fire department said no member of the family suffered serious injuries. A search is on for the driver of the van who was responsible for the accident.
